How to Care for Linen Polyester Blend to Maintain Its Appearance

Choose the Right Washing Method

For the washing of linen blends using polyester, both methods of hand washing and machine washing are acceptable if done correctly. For machine washing, one should set the machine to the gentle or delicate cycle. This cycle operates at slower spin speeds, with gentler agitation, minimizing the likelihood of the fabric being stretched or pilled. Do not use the heavy-duty cycle, as the vigorous movement poses a threat to the linen fibers within the blend. The water temperatures that are most suitable will either be cold or lukewarm, ideally around 30°C. Hot water will most likely cause the linen component to shrink and, in addition, fade the fabric color over time. The type of detergent to be used should be a mild, non-bleaching type. Any harsh detergent with bleach or mix of strong chemicals poses a threat to the fibers, losing the fabric's appearance. The washing machine should not be overloaded. Lack of rigging the device properly prevents the fabric from being cleaned and the likelihood of more wrinkles and friction damage. Again for hand washing, one should squeeze the fabric and not twist or wring it. Twisting the fabric poses the possibility of loosing the blend of the fabric and especially the linen part, which is weak when wet.

Dry the Fabric Properly

It is essential to dry a linen polyester blend correctly to maintain its shape and reduce wrinkles. Tumble drying is possible but requires attention to settings, as the use of a dryer on linen and polyester blends should ideally not exceed the low heat or air-dry cycle.  Shrinkage of linen, and melting of polyester fibers, results from the use of high heat. Put in a couple of dryer balls to help the linen polyester blend fabric dry fluffy. Avoid drying the fabric completely. Irons work easily on fabrics that still have some dampness, and dryer fabrics tend to be overly stiff and rigid. If air drying, the fabric should either be laid on a clean, dry towel or hung on a clothesline. Of the latter, shirts and dresses should be hanged and not heavy linen polyester blend blankets, as the latter, though heavy, slips over the hanged surface and sinks down, stretching the fabric in the process.  While laying flat, wrinkles should be smoothed down and not touched in order to help the fabric dry swiftly. More importantly, drying fabric should not be exposed directly and for long periods in the sun, as the color of the fabric softens and, after a long period, disappears completely.

Iron with Care to Remove Wrinkles

Ironing is always going to be a pesky addition to your routine but it is still a necessity. Linen is a natural fabric whereas polyester is a synthetic textile. Also, a polyester linen blend is a lot less wrinkle-prone than pure linen but it is still polyester linen blend, so some ironing is to be expected. Check the label attached to the fabric before ironing it to see the right temperature to which it should be heated. A standard poly linen blend can withstand a medium iron temperature. Always be careful not to use high temperature settings. High temperature is guaranteed to burn the polyester and any synthetic fabric, and the worst part is, it will leave shiny synthetic marks on the fabric. The fabric is also more manageable when it is slightly moist. It is recommended to iron garments after they are dry. Make sure to use the mist setting on the water spray bottle rather than a heavy stream - dampened slightly is the aim. Wherever possible, iron on the wrong side. Doing so will save the exposed surface of the fabric from the full brunt of the heat. This is a great tip to use especially on colored and printed linen polyester blends. More careful ironing is work done on parts of the garment which are more tailored. With these, use the tip of the iron and apply gentle but distributed pressure so you do not stretch the fabric. Remember not to linger on any one spot of the fabric for too long, as this can cause the marks of scorch and discoloration.

After you have done this, hang the garment without delay or place it flat. Doing so will make sure that the garment is wrinkle-free until it is time to wear.

Store the Linen Polyester Blend Correctly

Proper storage maintains linen polyester blend items in as pristine condition as possible middle of use. When putting items away, be sure the fabric is fully clean and dry. If dirt, sweat, or moisture is left behind, pests will be attracted due to the moisture or cause mold and mildew to grow, which will damage the fabric. For items that are folded such as sheets, towels, or garments, the closet or storage box should be cool, dry, and kept well ventilated. Do not store these items in plastic bags for lengthy time periods as the plastic will trap moisture which will cause the items to emit a musty odor. Better options include cotton storage bags or wrapping the items in acid-free tissue paper which will provide a barrier against dust and light. For items that are hung such as dresses, jackets, and shirts, use hangers that are wide shouldered. Narrow hangers tend to cause shoulder bumps and stretch the shoulders of the fabric. Make sure to leave space in between the hung items as this will allow air to circulate and avoid moisture from forming along the fabric. If the fabric is to be stored for long periods of time, such as with seasonal items, check up on them every once in a while. This helps to find problems such as mold and pests earlier in order to take care of them before it is too late.

Handle Stains Promptly and Properly

Like all stains, those on a polyester linen blend fabric can a negative impact on its appearance, which is why stains should be treated quickly!  Care should be taken to remove the stain with the appropriate method, ensuring the fabric is not damaged in the process. To remove stains such as liquid coffee, juice, and tea, grab a cloth to set on the stain and try to soak as much liquid as possible. Don’t rub the stain as you might push the liquid deeper into the fabric which will only cause the stain to grow. To remove oil-based stains such as makeup and grease, use a stain remover specifically made for delicate fabrics. Apply a tiny bit to the stain, rub it in with your fingers, and leave it for 5-10 minutes before washing. Most will say avoid the use of bleach, but with sras say it can sadden the color and weaken the fibers, especially on colored linen polyester blends. If the stain is too persistent, re-treat before washing. Fabric should be cleaned regularly as often washing helps remove any cleaning product residue.
